Benefits of a sod installation vs. seeding/hydroseeding

There are basically two ways to establish a lawn: turfgrass sod or seeding/hydroseeding.

Sodding: is applying strips of turfgrass sod to prepared soil creating an instant lawn.

Seeding/Hydroseeding: is applying selected turf-grass seeds to prepared soil, allowing it to grow in place to maturity. Hydroseeding incorporates a mixture of mulching material with the seed at time of application.

Based on surveys, the following are major benefits customers received by sodding home or commercial lawns:

  • Immediate visual impact - cultivated sod allows you to enjoy a lawn of instant beauty and maturity without the usual time-consuming hassles and the on=going costs related to seeding.
  • Usability - a sodded lawn allows low traffic use immediately and normal high traffic levels within two to three weeks. Because of this, sod stops mud tracking immediately. Seeded area allow traffic use two to four months after seeding and normal to high use only after the first year.
  • Sod stops washouts - sodded slopes can accept heavy rains without erosion or damage. Heavy rains, especially on seeded sloped areas will cause seed, chemicals and silt to wash onto sidewalks and into sewer systems.
  • Weed control - a sodded lawn requires minimal - if any - chemicals to control weeks because sod is cultivated using quality seed - most often certified, elite seed - and a production management program that virtually eliminates weeds from the sod field. Most seeded areas at residential and commercial sites lack such a management program and require multiple applications of chemicals to combat competitive weed invasions until the turf is established. Many weed seeds are in the soil used as a top layer at the installation side. Sod that is properly installed over weed infested soil stops the growth of most weeds.

Is a sod lawn less work?

Yes, a professional sod lawn needs no special care because it is a healthy mature lawn when installed, whereas a sprigged or seeded lawn requires years of nurturing to reach maturity. Sod is grown under expert supervision from either top quality seed blends or certified hybrid sprigs. After it's been installed, just water, mow and fertilize your sod lawn as needed and it will remain a healthy, green carpet of grass, requiring very little maintenance.

Can sod withstand heavy usage?

Certainly! Sod establishes itself quickly. In a couple of weeks, it's ready for full use. It creates the perfect surface for lawn games and family outdoor living. With today's various blends of hardy grasses, sod is chosen for parks, golf courses, athletic fields, as well as residential homes and business parks.

When can I install a sod lawn?

Sod has revolutionized the lawn business! Now you can install a sod lawn anytime during the year when the ground can be tilled. There is no need to wait for the "right" season to put in your lawn.

Is sod a good investment?

Yes -- it's the only way to go -- from bare soil to lush, green lawn in just hours. Yet, it's relatively inexpensive to use. In the few hours it takes to install your sod lawn, your property value increases significantly and even more in aesthetic value.

How will sod affect our environment?

With today's ecological concerns, many more people are considering sod for its environmental benefits.

Sod cools and cleans the atmosphere by reflecting the sun's heat and absorbing noises, carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants. It releases valuable oxygen and moisture into the air we breath. As it grows, sod silently contributes to a healthier environment.

Sod lawns meet the needs of today's fast-paced, demanding lifestyle.
